Follow these steps and we’ve got your back if something goes wrong.
Quick Overview
To be eligible for our one-time replacement guarantee:
-
Contact us within 48 hours of noticing an issue
-
Plants must be planted and cared for according to the advice on this page
-
You must have purchased a "Guarantee Pack" from Tav Gardens as part of your order
-
Guarantee lasts 18 months from purchase date
-
We offer one replacement per qualifying order — no second replacements
Overwatering, underwatering, or poor planting conditions (like waterlogging) will void the guarantee.
Planting Advice
Prepare the Planting Site
-
Plant in a weed- and grass-free border
-
Ensure good spacing between plants and nearby shrubs
-
Avoid areas that retain water – raise the bed or improve drainage if needed
Digging & Soil Prep
-
Dig holes 2–3 inches wider and deeper than the root ball
-
Loosen the soil at the bottom to help roots establish
-
Mix multi-purpose compost, bonemeal, and slow-release feed into the hole
Planting Steps
-
Remove the plant from its pot and loosen the roots
-
Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the ground
-
Backfill with compost and firm down gently
-
Water well at the base (not the foliage) immediately after planting
Watering Advice (First 12 Months)
Watering is the single most important factor in helping your hedge establish.
We recommend using a seep hose for consistent moisture and applying liquid seaweed feed at planting and again 4 weeks later.
Watering Schedule:
December – February
-
Dormant season — only water when first planted or during warm/dry spells
March – May
-
Water thoroughly once a day (adjust based on rain, wind, and drainage)
-
Increase frequency during hot/dry weather
June – August
-
Water thoroughly once a day
-
For clay or poor-draining soil, use a “little and often” approach
September – November
-
Reduce frequency but maintain a consistently damp root zone
Always check the soil depth — surface moisture doesn't always mean roots are hydrated.
Never allow plants to sit in waterlogged soil.
Plant-Specific Watering Tips
Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Leylandii, Griselinia, Photinia Red Robin
-
Prefer deep watering in spring/summer
-
Sensitive to waterlogging — ensure free-draining soil
Taxus Yew & Privet (Ligustrum)
-
Prefer less frequent watering
-
Ideal in well-draining conditions
-
Stick to once or twice a week depending on weather
Common Concerns (What’s Not Covered)
-
Cherry Laurel leaf holes are normal and not harmful — not covered
-
Underwatering, overwatering, or planting in poor soil will void the guarantee
-
Improper care or failure to follow our advice makes the plants ineligible for replacement
